SoGalBoss Summit Vol. 1 - Women In Investing


SoGal Ventures and Galboss Asia have joined forces in 2017 to create SOGALBOSS, a four-part quarterly half-day summit aimed at educating and empowering women in the areas on business, entrepreneurship, and leadership. Women In Investing is the first of the four-part quarterly summit. Following topics will include Women and Entrepreneurship, Women in Consumer Lifestyle Businesses and Women in Leadership.

The first summit in the series, Women in Investing will be on 21 October 2017, from 2pm – 6pm, at The Powder Room at 19 Cecil Street. The half-day event will include keynotes, presentations, and hands-on workshops on investing in startups, as well as 2 panel discussions by experienced investors on the topics of venture capital and angel investing for women.

Pocket Sun – Co-founder & Managing Partner at SoGal Ventures

Pocket Sun is Co-founder and Managing Partner of SoGal Ventures, the world’s first female-led millennial venture capital firm investing in startups in the US and Asia. Michael Lints – Partner at Golden Gate Ventures

Michael studied Management and Control of information science. After his graduation, he worked briefly as a consultant and project manager at one of the largest insurance companies in the Netherlands, after which he started his own IT business, an IT System Maintenance Company. In 2007, Michael founded his own venture fund focused on Dutch SME’s before joining Golden Gate Ventures as a venture partner. Michael has had various positions on a societal and administrative level as a result of which he has been able to build an extensive international network. Michael is a former vice chairman of the Economic Development Board Rotterdam and studied Financial Analysis for Business Valuation, and Private Equity and Venture Capital at Harvard Business School.

Golden Gate Ventures focus their investments on seed investments and Series A (growth financing) in South East Asia. The market for Series A investments in South East Asia is young but shows high growth. Golden Gate Ventures believes in the potential of the South East Asian tech ecosystem, with Singapore as its hub. Yielding the largest financial returns is not just done through investments but also by nurturing and helping to mature the ecosystem.

Virginia Cha - Adjunct Professor of Entrepreneurship at INSEAD and Innovation and Entrepreneurship at NUS Business School

Virginia is an educator, mentor, and angel investor in Singapore’s entrepreneur ecosystem with more than 37 years of professional experiences in technology companies and new ventures. In her multi-faceted industry career which spanned multiple countries, Virginia was the Director of Advanced Technology at a U.S. multinational technology company, the first technology transfer officer (infocomm) for the Republic of Singapore, co-founder and CEO of multiple venture-funded, hi-tech companies with successful exits on NASDAQ and HKSE, chief representative of private equity fund with holdings in technology ventures and science park property interests, founder and serial entrepreneur in multiple ventures in China and in Singapore.

Virginia’s book Asia's Entrepreneurs Dilemmas, Risks and Opportunities (Routledge), published in 2013, is a “must read for those interested in knowing a slice of Singapore’s recent entrepreneurial history.” Virginia also serves on the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Systems and Platform (2016-2018). In addition to her professional interests, Virginia’s main passion is in wuxia novels and is an avid fan of Louis Cha’s novels. Virginia earned her first degree in Information Computer Science from the University of Hawaii, and her PhD from the National University of Singapore. She started her career as an operating systems programmer at Burroughs Corporation in the U.S. in 1980.


Cooper currently serves as COO and CFO of SKIN INC, the world’s first skin supplement bar offering the broadest range of customizable skincare solutions to give your skin exactly what it needs, when it needs it. Prior to SKIN INC, Cooper served as the COO of Ensogo Group, a publicly-listed online marketplace with operations in Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, and Indonesia where he was responsible for leading the company's restructuring efforts. Prior to Ensogo, as co-founder and CFO, Cooper built ZALORA Group into Asia Pacific’s leading group of online fashion destinations with responsibility for core infrastructure including corporate finance, finance and accounting, business intelligence, legal and human resources. His first experience in Asia was with Viet Thai International, a leading Vietnamese consumer conglomerate, where he helped develop the finance and planning function. He began his career at Goldman Sachs in New York where he worked as an equity research analyst covering the specialty finance and insurance industries.

Lee Xueling - Case Team Leader at Bain & Company

Lee Xueling is a case team leader in Bain & Company’s Southeast Asia office and a member of Bain’s Institutional Investors Practice. Xueling joined the firm in 2011 and has focused on private equity and M&A, serving institutional investors on a broad range of topics including fund strategy, corporate M&A, commercial due diligence, and portfolio company value creation to fund strategy. Outside of Bain, Xueling is passionate about social impact and is heavily involved in Bain’s Social Impact practice in Singapore, where she actively works on pro-bono projects for nonprofits. She currently sits on the Executive Committee of Singapore’s Young Women’s Leadership Connection, chaired by Minister Grace Fu.

Xueling holds an MBA from Harvard Business School, an Ed.M from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a BSc in Government and Economics (First Class Honors) from the London School of Economics.

Melissa Heng - Vice President at General Atlantic

Melissa is a founding member of General Atlantic’s Singapore office, where she helped establish and build the South-East Asia business. She joined the firm in 2011 and is responsible for the origination and execution of investment opportunities in the region, with a focus on internet & technology and consumer facing businesses. Prior to GA, Melissa was an investment banker at Macquarie focusing on capital markets and M&A transactions in the telecommunications, media, entertainment and technology space in Singapore and the Middle East. Melissa received her MBA from INSEAD and her Bachelor of Laws (Hons) from King’s College London. She is a qualified Advocate & Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore and started off her career as a corporate finance lawyer at Drew & Napier. Melissa feels strongly about climate change, and spends time outside of work as a Climate Fellowship evaluator for Echoing Green, a global non-profit that provides seed stage funding for social entrepreneurs.

Elaine Kim, Co-founder & CEO at CRIB

An experienced entrepreneur and angel investor, Elaine is the co-founder and CEO of CRIB, a Singapore-based social enterprise that empowers women to become successful entrepreneurs. CRIB provides female founders with a business network, access to funding from early-stage investors who form the CRIB Angels Club, and training, MBA coaching and mentorship.

As a working parent, and a passionate advocate for involved parenthood alongside career success, Elaine co-founded Trehaus Co-work on Singapore's Orchard Rd, Asia's first co-working space which combines a vibrant, conducive co-working environment with an adjacent creche that provides full child-minding, nursery programmes and enrichment classes.

Lisa Enckell - Angel Investor, Interim CMO

Lisa Enckell is a global angel investor and marketing consultant for startups based in Singapore. She often takes on interim CMO and leadership roles for fast-growing companies. Currently, she's working for a consumer startup in Mumbai and a fintech company in Stockholm. In addition, she's doing early-stage investments together with her partner Andreas Ehn (former CTO and first employee at Spotify). They have made angel investments in the calendar app Sunrise (exit), the period tracker Clue and the vehicle tracker Automile, to mention a few.

Before moving to Asia she lived in San Francisco and was the VP marketing at Wrapp. Lisa has also worked as a PR consultant, public speaker and theatre producer. She holds an MSc in Business and Economics from the Stockholm School of Economics.

Cynthia Ding - Co-founder and Partner at Y Incubator

Cynthia is a veteran in technology investment and innovation commercialization, who has been working in IBM, Microsoft and other MNCs in senior management role. Besides the unique experience in managing $10B global portfolio, she gained profound knowledge of market entry & localization strategy in developing markets. She is the founding partner of Yincubator which is dedicated to investing in enterprise solution startups and believing the future transformation of ASEAN business landscape by deep tech. Yincubator’s portfolio include fast-growing companies in SaaS , AI and cloud computing. Cynthia is the graduate of CKGSB, also studied in Wharton Business School and Tsinghua EMBA program.

Alice Besomi - Investor at Jungle Ventures

Alice has been advising and investing in startups for 7 years, first at Paris-based Venture Firm A Plus Finance where she helped digital French startups grow and expend in Europe then at Jungle Ventures since 2014 where she's been investing into seed and Series A companies across Southeast Asia. Prior to joining Jungle, she has been involved in several fundraising projects for startups in France and HK.
Originally from France she holds a Master in BA from Paris Dauphine University and a Master in Political sciences from Sciences Po Lille. She studied one year in University of Quebec in Montreal. Currently based in Singapore.
